Something big happened to Paul between 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians. It does not take a scholar or even deep biblical understanding to come to this important conclusion. Instead, take the time to read 1 Corinthians and then 2 Corinthians right in a row, in one sitting. There is a marked difference in tone between the two books. In 1 Corinthians, Paul is bold and brash. In 2 Corinthians, Paul is defensive and downcast, but not overcome.
Noted New Testament scholar, N.T Wright, was not the first scholar to note the differences in tone between 1 and 2 Corinthians. Still, no one yet has written about those differences in tone between these two books quite as strikingly as Wright:
"…something has happened, that in the comparatively short time between the letters – a year or two at most – something has happened which changed him, and that he and the Corinthians have been through something that has changed their relationship. In both cases the changes have left them, like the wedding guest in The Ancient Mariner, sadder and wiser."
This weekend, we want to better understand this event described in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9 and how the Apostle Paul responded so resiliently. I'll give you a hint: Jesus!
