Who sent the storm? That’s one of the questions that we’re invited to ask as we consider the account of Jesus calming the storm. Was it the forces of evil? When we read the Scriptures, we have justification for thinking about evil sending the storm. The forces of evil are often pictured as beasts coming out of the sea. Leviathan is a terrible beast that frolics in the sea. Rahab is a beast that comes out of the sea to destroy God’s people. Revelation pictures the same sort of thing for us: a beast that comes from the sea. Was it the forces of evil that sent the storm?
Or was it God? Was it God who sent the storm so that his Son could prove his sure power and authority over the spiritual forces of evil?
The answer to the question doesn’t matter much. What matters most is the lesson that Jesus taught his disciples by his sleep, by his authority, and by his strong words. What matters most is the lesson that we learn from this account. Tomorrow, as we keep walking through Mark, we’re starting a new series that will look at the miracles of Jesus. We’ll be looking at Mark 4:35-41 and the calming of the storm.
Can’t wait! Pastor Nate
