Persistent

God is serious about our salvation. As obstinate and stiff-necked as his people were, God was even more so. He would not give up on his people, not even after twenty-three years! He was, in a word, persistent. If we were to add a second word and even a third, we might say he was relentless and gracious.

We, his people, are just like him. At least, we want to be. We want to rise morning by morning, day after day, to rise and grind so-to-speak. We want to be just like our God. Persistent about his word. Persistent about our callings. Persistent about remaining faithful to him. Persistently looking to the skies, waiting and watching for him to call.

This Sunday, we’re entering a season that’s called “Advent.” Advent meanings coming. And it’s a time during our life together as a church that we remember the coming of Jesus the first time; it is a time during which we long and prepare for the coming of Jesus for the second time. It’s a time of longing, a time of waiting, a time of hopeful expectation, and even a time of preparation.

It’s good for us in preparation for him to hear our God now. At the same time, it is also good for us to join the prophet in our own persistence with the word of the Lord. We’ll spend one more week with Jeremiah before we jump into the Gospel of Mark. This weekend, we’ll be in Jeremiah 25 (Chapter 25 is the end of the first half of Jeremiah and a fitting way for us to wrap up this first Jeremiah series). We’ll begin to get a grasp on the persistent pursuit of God. We’ll also hear his call to our own persistence about his business. God will help us and strengthen us to be persistent.
