What do you see when you spend some time looking at the picture above? What do you see first? What do you think first? What is the artist trying to communicate with you about Jesus? About his praying? About his burden? About where that burden comes from?
The gospel writer, Mark, is an artist who paints with words. In the text before us this weekend (Mark 14:32-52), he paints a picture of a vivid and authentic conversation between the Son and the Father. They have a conversation about a cup. They have a conversation about wrath. They have a conversation about submission. They have a conversation about God’s will and our salvation. It is a vivid picture that Mark paints for us, and we get to look on in awe.
Art moves us. Each of us in different ways. It is meant to do that. This weekend in worship, we will take some time in the art gallery of Scripture, seeing the scene that Mark paints for us. Each image is full of color and gives us eyes of faith to see the scene of salvation unfolding before us.
